How to Sell a Polymarket Ticket Early (US 2026)

You already hold a Yes/No. This is how you exit the book before resolution — not a bank withdraw, and not a sportsbook cash-out button.

By Scott · Last verified August 8, 2026

Trading involves risk — an early sale is not a floor

Polymarket offers CFTC-regulated event contracts: financial/derivatives products, not sportsbook bets and not daily fantasy. You can lose money, including your entire stake. Selling early locks the fill the book will pay, which can be worse than waiting for settlement — or better, if you would have been wrong. Nothing on this page is investment advice. For adults 18+ with KYC. State availability can change. DFS pages on this site use a separate 21+ / 1-800-GAMBLER frame — do not mix the two.

Advertising disclosure: the claim button is an affiliate link. We may earn a commission if you sign up through it, at no extra cost to you. That never changes our ratings, and it is not a user bonus.

Who this guide is for

US adults who already hold a Yes or No NFL ticket and want to exit before the contract resolves. This is not how to cash out, not how to deposit, not how to read a contract, not how an NFL ticket grades, and not how to use Polymarket on mobile. Those pages are the bank off-ramp, the on-ramp, the ticket, the grade, and the phone path. This page is the exchange exit: bid versus ask, sell versus wait for settle, why the price moved, and what “liquidity” means when the book is sleepy. Polymarket is the only live outbound on this page.

Bid, ask, and the spread

Official Prices & Market Data and Spreads describe a central limit order book. Polymarket US does not set the price. Other traders post bids and asks. Your early sale is a trade against that book — see prediction markets vs sportsbooks if you are looking for a house cash-out button. There isn’t one.

Bid

What a buyer will pay

Official US Spreads and Prices & Market Data: the bid is the highest price other traders are willing to pay for the side you hold. When you sell into the book, you receive the bid — not the last print, and not a sportsbook cash-out quote. If the best bid is thin, the next bids down the book are what a larger exit walks into.

Ask (offer)

What a seller will take

The ask is the lowest price other traders will accept. Official docs: you buy at the ask and sell at the bid. The ask is useful when you are still holding — it is the other wall of the book — but it is not the price a marketable sell is paid.

Spread

The gap you pay to cross

Official Spreads: the spread is the gap between best bid and best ask. A tight spread is a liquid book. A wide spread is a sleepy or one-sided book — you pay more to get in and receive less to get out. The BBO (best bid and offer) is the tightest price on each side right now. We do not reprint a live spread.

Sell now versus wait for settle

An open ticket is not cash. Official Can I sell early? and Market Settlement are two different exits. Do not treat them as one clock, and do not treat either as a bank deposit.

Sell the ticket now

While the market is still open

Official US “Can I sell early?”: you can close a position at any time and do not have to wait for resolution. Sale proceeds are added immediately to your cash balance. That is cash on the exchange. Official Place a Trade uses the same split: cash out anytime while the market is open, or hold until it resolves. The fill is the book in-app — bid, size, and any trading fee on that fill — not a number we invent here.

Wait for settle

After the official result, then Clearing

Official US Market Settlement: once the outcome is finalized, Polymarket Clearing sets winning contracts to $1.00, losing contracts to $0.00, and updates your Portfolio when settlement completes. Official Price Slippage adds that when the book is thin near the end, holding through resolution can be the better exit because a winner pays the full settlement price. Close is not pay. We could not verify a public minute-count from whistle to Portfolio update.

Cash out to the bank

A later page — after you have cash

Selling early is not a debit-card deposit. Official Check Your Balance: proceeds from a sale return to cash automatically; withdrawals come only from that cash, and only after the funding deposit has fully cleared. The rails, FIFO rule, and timing live on How to cash out on Polymarket. This page stops at the exchange exit.

Official US docs · no invented P&L · close is not a bank credit

Why the price moves

Official How are Polymarket odds determined?: the displayed price is the last matched trade in the book. It updates when someone buys or sells. Polymarket US does not set prices and does not take the other side. A score, an injury, a weather delay, or time coming off the clock is other traders rewriting bids and asks. Official “Can I sell early?” is blunt about the late window: prices can change quickly as the event nears resolution, and that can change what you receive if you sell before the outcome is known.

Official “Why does my position look down right after I buy?” is a different, quieter move: Polymarket US only fills whole contracts. Leftover dollars from a dollar-amount order return to cash, so Portfolio can show the position slightly down even though you did not take a market loss. That is not a reason to panic-sell, and it is not a live price we reprint.

What “liquidity” means on a sleepy market

Official Liquidity is not a vibe. It is posted size at each price. A headline mid-price with almost nothing behind it is a sleepy book. Your sell fills the best bid first, then the next, then the next. The average you receive can be worse than the number on the ticket — that gap is price slippage.

Quiet book, not just a late game

Official Price Impact says posted size often drops in quiet periods, before major announcements, and near deadlines when traders cancel resting orders. A Thursday-afternoon total on a game that is still two days out can be as thin as a fourth-quarter moneyline. If your exit is large relative to the size sitting on the bid, official docs say the leftover walks worse prices.

Live sports — size can vanish

Official Liquidity flags live sports as when liquidity thins or disappears: late in the fourth quarter, overtime, right after a turnover, score, penalty, or injury, and right before the match ends when the outcome looks nearly certain. Orders can be added or pulled in seconds. Official Price Slippage adds the winner-side version: as a result looks decided, demand on the already-expensive side often drops, so an early exit of a “winning” ticket can fill worse than the displayed price. Those pages illustrate the walk with teaching books. We will not paste those cents here as if they were tonight’s NFL board.

What official docs say to do about it

Official Liquidity: watch the price in the second before you submit; consider smaller clips instead of one sweep; be extra cautious at the end of a game; pause if the book is moving. Official Price Slippage: when liquidity is thin, consider holding until settlement — a winner pays the full settlement price. Official Order Types: unfilled size can rest on the book at your price until it fills or you cancel. Confirm the live ticket. We do not invent a custom limit-price field the retail Place a Trade flow does not describe.

Official US docs · no live depth · no invented fill · sleepy ≠ closed

The US sell-early sequence

  1. Step 1

Confirm the market is still open — not paused, not already closed

Official US Prices & Market Data list market states: Open accepts orders; Suspended or Halted means trading has been paused or stopped; Expired means the market has ended and settled. Official Trading Hours: the desk is nearly 24/7 except a weekly maintenance window Thursday 2:00–6:00 a.m. ET, plus emergency pauses. Official “Can I sell early?” applies while the market is open. After the last-trade stamp, you are holding to settlement — that grade is the resolution how-to, not this page.

  2. Step 2

Open the ticket you already hold and read bid versus ask

Official Monitor Your Positions: Portfolio shows cash, open positions, average entry, current market price, and potential payout. Official Spreads: a sell is paid the bid; a buy pays the ask. The last trade is history. The BBO is the book right now. We do not reprint a live NFL price. Read the Yes/No sentence on the ticket you actually hold — that reading lives on How to read a Polymarket NFL contract.

  3. Step 3

Check posted size — especially on a sleepy or late-game book

Official Liquidity: liquidity is the size sitting at each price. Orders fill the best price first, then walk the book. Official Price Impact: quiet periods, pre-announcement windows, and near-deadline cancels thin the book; even a modest exit can sweep several levels. Official Liquidity calls out live sports — late fourth quarter, overtime, right after a score or injury — as when size can vanish. If your size is close to what is posted near the bid, a smaller clip or waiting for settle is the official caution, not a tip we invented.

  4. Step 4

Submit the close and read the live fill — partials can rest

Official Order Types: Polymarket US processes orders as marketable limit orders. Available size fills at the best price shown; if the book is short, you get a partial fill and the rest can sit as an open order until it fills or you cancel. Official Orders & Trading: close a long Yes by selling Yes; close a short by buying Yes back. Official Place a Trade is dollar amount, review, swipe to confirm. We will not invent a button label the live ticket does not show. A publisher link is how this site is supported — it is not extra credit in your account.

  5. Step 5

Treat sale proceeds as cash on the exchange — then stop. Bank payout is a different how-to

Official “Can I sell early?” and Check Your Balance: sale proceeds hit cash immediately. That is not a bank credit. Withdrawing debit, ACH, or wire — and the deposit-clear clock those rails wait on — is How to cash out on Polymarket. Event contracts can settle at zero if you hold instead. Trade only what you can afford to lose. Nothing here is investment advice.

Fees and lockups — what is published, what is not

Official Fee Schedule is a trading schedule, effective exchange-wide from 12:00 a.m. ET Wednesday, July 1, 2026. Takers pay; makers receive a rebate at the fill. The formula scales with price uncertainty and is highest near a coin-flip price. Official FAQ on that page: fees are deducted when a trade executes; canceled, expired, or rejected orders are not charged; small fills can round to zero. We will not reprint the dollar table.

We could not confirm a separate “sell-early” fee on top of that schedule. We could not confirm a holding-period lockup after you buy. Official “Can I sell early?” does not print a wait — it says you can close at any time while the market is open. The limits we can confirm are market state (suspended, halted, expired) and the Thursday 2:00–6:00 a.m. ET maintenance window. Confirm the live order screen before you swipe.

A sale that lands as cash is still not a withdraw. Official Check Your Balance and the cash-out how-to are the off-ramp after the funding deposit has fully cleared. This page does not repeat debit / ACH / wire.

Blocked and contested states

Reported unavailable as of June 2026: Arizona, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada and Ohio. That list is not a promise it stays still — litigation around sports event contracts in particular can narrow or shift access. If you are in a listed state, do not plan an early exit on the assumption the desk is open. If you are in Florida or another green-light state, still confirm the ticket appears and still accepts orders before you treat the bid as yours.

What you will not get from this page

A dollar welcome match, a paste-this promo code, a live NFL bid or ask, an invented P&L with cents that look like tonight’s board, a guaranteed fill at the last print, a published early-exit lockup we could not find, a bank-wire walkthrough, or claim buttons for Kalshi, DraftKings, FanDuel, Underdog, Sleeper, PrizePicks, Hard Rock or BetRivers. We could not verify a standing official US welcome bonus on Polymarket’s own terms. Other publishers’ partner codes are theirs; we do not copy them. The honest user-facing line is still US access via CFTC-regulated QCEX — you can close an open ticket while the market is open, you sell at the bid the book will pay, a sleepy book can slip, settlement is the other exit, and cash-out to the bank is a later step. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sell a Polymarket US ticket before the game resolves?
Yes, while the market is still open. Official US “Can I sell early?”: you can close a position at any time and do not have to wait for resolution. Sale proceeds are added immediately to your cash balance. After the market is closed, expired, suspended, or halted, that page does not apply — you wait for settlement or for trading to resume. We do not invent a “closes at kickoff” rule; the stamp on the ticket is the trading rule.
What is bid versus ask when I sell?
Official Spreads: the bid is the highest price buyers will pay; the ask is the lowest price sellers will accept. You sell at the bid and buy at the ask. The spread is the gap between them. A wide spread on a sleepy book means you receive less to exit than the last print suggested. We do not reprint a live bid or ask.
What does “liquidity” mean on a sleepy Polymarket book?
Official Liquidity: liquidity is posted size at each price. A sleepy book has little size near the best bid, so an exit walks down the book and your average fill is worse than the headline price. Official Price Impact adds that quiet periods and near-deadline cancels thin depth. Official Liquidity also flags live sports late, overtime, and right after a major play. Official Price Slippage: when the likely winner is already priced in, buyers on that side can disappear — holding to settlement may pay $1 instead of a slipped sale.
Why did the price move after I bought?
Official “How are Polymarket odds determined?”: prices come from matched user trades. Polymarket US does not set the price or take the other side. New information — a score, an injury, a lineup, time off the clock — is other traders updating bids and asks. Official “Can I sell early?” adds that prices can change quickly as the event nears resolution. That move is the book, not a house recast.
Is selling early the same as cashing out to my bank?
No. Selling early turns an open Yes/No into cash on the exchange. Official Check Your Balance: withdrawals come only from cash, and only back to the original deposit source after that deposit has fully cleared. The three US rails and the timing live on the cash-out how-to. This page does not repeat them.
Do I pay a fee or sit in a lockup if I sell early?
Official Fee Schedule (effective 12:00 a.m. ET July 1, 2026) is a trading-fee table: takers pay, makers receive a rebate, and the charge scales with price uncertainty. We could not confirm a separate “early-exit” fee on top of that schedule, and we could not confirm a holding-period lockup after you buy. Official “Can I sell early?” does not print a wait. Fees are charged when a trade executes, not when an order is canceled. Confirm the live order screen. We do not reprint the dollar table.
What if the market is suspended, halted, or already closed?
Official market states: Suspended is a temporary pause; Halted means trading has been stopped; Expired means the market has ended and settled. Official Trading Hours add a weekly Thursday 2:00–6:00 a.m. ET maintenance window and emergency pauses. You cannot sell through a pause. After close, official Market Settlement is the path: winners $1, losers $0, Portfolio updates when Clearing finishes.
Is this the same as the cash-out, deposit, contract, resolution, or mobile how-to?
No. Deposit is how money arrives. The contract how-to is how to read Yes/No before you click. Resolution is how an NFL ticket grades. Cash-out is how cash leaves to debit, ACH, or wire. Mobile is the phone path. This page is only the exchange exit: bid/ask, sell versus settle, why the price moves, and what liquidity means on a sleepy book.
Can I sell a Polymarket ticket early in every US state?
No. As of our June 2026 check Polymarket was reported unavailable in Arizona, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada and Ohio. Florida is a green-light state. Sports markets are the most legally contested category anywhere. Confirm the ticket still appears and still accepts orders before you treat an exit as available.
Is there a Polymarket sell-early bonus or promo code on this page?
No. We do not publish a dollar welcome or a promo code. Partner codes that appear on other sites belong to those publishers. Confirm any live terms in the Polymarket US app. If you open Polymarket through our link we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you — that is not a user bonus.
