Who this guide is for
US adults who already bought a market order and now want a limit — set a price, wait for a fill. This is not how to buy your first NFL ticket, not how to sell a ticket early, not how fees work, not how to read a contract, and not how to read a spread or total. Those pages are the first swipe, the exchange exit, the cost stack, the sentence, and the printed number. This page is the resting order: bid versus ask, limit versus market, cancel, and what a partial fill means. Then we link out. Polymarket is the only live outbound on this page.
Bid versus ask
Official Prices & Market Data and Spreads describe a central limit order book. Polymarket US does not set the price. Other traders post bids and asks. Your limit is a price against that book — not a sportsbook hold. See prediction markets vs sportsbooks if you are looking for a house line you can park. There isn’t one.
Bid
What a buyer will pay
Official Spreads, Prices & Market Data, and Glossary: the bid is the highest price other traders will pay. A resting buy limit that does not cross the book sits on this side. When you later sell, you receive the bid — that exit is the sell-early how-to, not this page. We do not reprint a live bid.
Ask (offer)
What a seller will take
The ask is the lowest price other traders will accept. Official Spreads: a marketable buy pays the ask. Official Prices & Market Data: the BBO is the tightest bid and ask right now — the price a market order would trade at. A limit you set below the ask is a wait, not an instant fill.
Spread
The gap you pay to cross
Official Spreads: the spread is the gap between best bid and best ask. Official Orders & Trading: a market order fills immediately and you pay that gap. A limit that rests does not cross it until someone hits your price. We do not reprint a live spread, and we do not clone the spread-or-total how-to — that page is the printed number on a sports ticket, not this book gap.

Limit versus market
Official Orders & Trading splits the two. Official Order Types is the processing rule underneath. Official Place a Trade is still the retail swipe — Yes or No, a dollar amount or Max, review, confirm. We will not invent a second ticket type the live screen does not show.
Market order
Fill now at the book
Official Orders & Trading: a market order fills immediately at the best available price. You get instant execution and you pay the spread. Official Prices & Market Data: you are a taker — you take posted size. That is the first-ticket swipe: dollar amount, review, confirm. This page does not repeat that click path.
Limit order
Set a price, then wait
Official Orders & Trading: you set a price. The order sits on the book until someone trades against it, or you cancel it. Official Prices & Market Data: if that price does not cross the best available on the other side, you are a maker — you add size. If it does cross, it fills immediately, like a market order. Official Order Types adds price protection: the fill is never worse than the price you set.
Marketable limit — the US processing rule
Official Order Types
Official Order Types: Polymarket US processes orders as marketable limit orders. Available size fills at the best price shown; leftover size can rest as an open order until it fills or you cancel. Official Glossary: a marketable limit is an order that fills at the best available price shown on your screen. That is the engine under both a now-fill and a wait-for-fill — not a second sportsbook ticket type.
Official US docs · set a price or take the book · no invented Limit tab
Fill, partial, cancel
Official Order Types and Official Orders & Trading are the two clocks after you confirm. Neither is a bank deposit. The deep exit is How to sell a Polymarket ticket early — this page stops at the resting order.
Full fill
The size you asked for
Official Order Types: if enough size is available at your price or better, the entire order fills. Official Orders & Trading lifecycle: Filled means the whole order matched. Official Place a Trade: open Portfolio to track the position. That ticket is now an open Yes/No — not a bank credit.
Partial fill
Some now, some resting
Official Order Types: if the book is short, you receive a partial fill and the unfilled portion stays on the book as an open order until it is filled or canceled. Official Glossary: a partial fill is when only part of your order fills. Official teaching example uses a $0.52 ask and a 1,000-lot clip — that is a docs book, not tonight’s NFL board. Your execution price reflects only the portion that filled.
Cancel the rest
Unfilled size is not a fill
Official Orders & Trading and Order Types: a resting limit stays until someone trades against it or you cancel it. Official Fee Schedule FAQ: canceled, expired, or rejected orders are not charged — fees apply only when a trade executes. We will not invent a button label the live ticket does not show. Confirm the open-order screen in-app.

GTC, IOC — what is published
Hard rule: if official US help prints a time-in-force label, we name it. If the retail swipe does not show that picker, we say so.
Good till cancel (GTC)
Published — concepts page
Official Orders & Trading: stays open until it fills or you cancel it. That is the waiting limit this how-to is about. Official Place a Trade and Order Placement do not name GTC on the first-buy swipe. We could not confirm those four letters as a retail picker. Confirm the live ticket.
Immediate or cancel (IOC)
Published — concepts page
Official Orders & Trading: fills whatever is available right now and cancels the rest. No resting remainder. Official Place a Trade does not describe an IOC toggle. We will not invent one on the swipe. If the live ticket does not show IOC, do not assume the leftover will vanish.
GTD and FOK
Also on that table
Official Orders & Trading also lists Good till date (cancels at a specific time) and Fill or kill (must fill completely or not at all — no partials). Same caveat: those labels are on the concepts page, not on the retail Place a Trade sequence we checked. We do not invent a date picker or an all-or-nothing switch.

The US limit-order sequence
-
Step 1
Confirm the market is still open — then read bid versus ask
Official Prices & Market Data: Open accepts orders; Suspended, Halted, or Expired does not. Official Trading Hours: the desk is nearly 24/7 except a weekly Thursday 2:00–6:00 a.m. ET maintenance window, plus emergency pauses. Official Spreads: a buy that takes the book pays the ask; a sell receives the bid. We do not reprint a live BBO. If you do not yet hold a first fill, use How to buy your first NFL ticket — this page assumes you already know that swipe.
-
Step 2
Choose limit versus market — set a price only if you will wait
Official Orders & Trading: a market order fills immediately at the best available price and you pay the spread. A limit order is a price you set; it sits until someone trades against it or you cancel. Official Prices & Market Data: if your limit crosses the other side, it fills now, like a market. Official Place a Trade is still Yes or No, a dollar amount or Max, review, swipe. We will not invent a “Limit” tab or a cents field the live ticket does not show. Confirm the order screen.
-
Step 3
Size the clip — whole contracts only — then review before you confirm
Official Fractional Contracts: Polymarket US fills whole event contracts only; leftover dollars that cannot buy a full contract return to cash. Official Order Types: execution follows available size and time-and-price priority on the CLOB. Official Place a Trade does not print a minimum limit-order dollar amount — we will not invent one. Size only what you can afford to lose. A publisher link is how this site is supported — it is not extra credit in your account.
-
Step 4
Watch the fill — full, partial, or still open
Official Orders & Trading lifecycle: Pending, then Open, Partially filled, Filled, or Canceled / Expired / Rejected. Official Order Types: leftover size can rest at your price. Official Monitor Your Positions: Portfolio shows cash, open positions, average entry, and current market value. That open ticket is not a withdraw. Selling it early, reading the contract sentence, and the fee formula live on their own pages — this how-to links them instead of cloning them.
-
Step 5
Cancel unfilled size if you no longer want the rest — then stop
Official Order Types and Orders & Trading: cancel the open remainder. Official Fee Schedule: no fee on a cancel. We will not invent a button label. After a fill, hold, sell-early, or cash-out are later pages. Event contracts can settle at zero. Trade only what you can afford to lose. Nothing here is investment advice.
Fees — no published limit-versus-market table
Official Fee Schedule is a taker versus maker schedule, effective exchange-wide from 12:00 a.m. ET Wednesday, July 1, 2026. Takers pay theta 0.06; makers receive a −0.0125 rebate. The formula is Θ × C × p × (1 − p). Official FAQ on that page: fees are deducted when a trade executes; canceled, expired, or rejected orders are not charged. We will not reprint the dollar table.
We could not confirm a separate “limit order” fee or a “market order” fee on top of that schedule. Official Prices & Market Data maps the roles: a market (or a limit that crosses) takes liquidity; a resting limit that later gets hit makes liquidity. That is the published split — not a second juice line we invent. The deep formula is How Polymarket fees work (US). This page does not clone it.
Blocked and contested states
Reported unavailable as of June 2026: Arizona, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada and Ohio. That list is not a promise it stays still — litigation around sports event contracts in particular can narrow or shift access. If you are in a listed state, do not rest a limit on the assumption the desk is open. If you are in Florida or another green-light state, still confirm the ticket appears and still accepts orders before you leave size on the book.
Age is 18+ with identity verification. That is a different gate from the 21+ / responsible-gambling frame on our DFS pages, because these are traded financial instruments. If you also want NFL DFS, start at the picks hub — those lineup rules do not carry over. Compare platforms on the prediction-markets hub.
What you will not get from this page
A dollar welcome match, a paste-this promo code, a live NFL bid or ask, an invented cents field, a GTC/IOC dropdown we could not find on the retail swipe, a published limit-versus-market fee table we could not find, a cloned first-ticket / sell-early / fees / contract / spread-or-total walkthrough, or claim buttons for Kalshi, DraftKings, FanDuel, Underdog, Sleeper, PrizePicks, Hard Rock or BetRivers. We could not verify a standing official US welcome bonus on Polymarket’s own terms. Other publishers’ partner codes are theirs; we do not copy them. The honest user-facing line is still US access via CFTC-regulated QCEX — a limit is a price you set that can rest, a market takes the book now, a partial can sit, cancel is free until a fill, GTC/IOC are on the concepts page, and anything those US pages do not print is not a rule we invent.
