Who this guide is for
US adults who already sent size and now see only part of it matched — what that middle state means, how official US help or the live order list labels it if those pages print a name, and why the leftover is still an open order. This is not how to read open orders, not how to cancel or edit an order, not how to read the order book, not how to tell maker from taker, and not how to read average entry. Those pages are the working-order list, the cancel control, the public ladder, the role on a fill, and the cost on shares you already hold. This page is the split: some filled, rest still open. Then we link out. Polymarket is the only live outbound on this page.
What a partial fill is
Official Glossary names partial fill. Official Orders & Trading names the lifecycle state Partially filled. Official Order Types is what happens to the leftover. See prediction markets vs sportsbooks if you wanted a house pending ticket that only partly graded. There isn’t one.
A partial fill is some size matched — not the whole clip
Official Glossary
Official Glossary: a fill is when your order completes, fully or partially; a partial fill is when only part of your order fills. That is the split this page is after. Some contracts already matched. The rest did not. Do not read that middle state as “the order failed,” and do not read it as “I already own the whole size I posted.”
Official lifecycle name is Partially filled
Official Orders & Trading
Official Orders & Trading lists the states after you send size: Pending, then Open, Partially filled, Filled, or Canceled / Expired / Rejected. Partially filled is the published middle: some of your order has matched, the rest is still open. Official Glossary’s order status line uses the same three retail words — open, filled, or partially filled. We reprint those published names. We will not invent a fourth status chip.
The matched piece is already a position
Official Orders & Trading + Glossary
Official Orders & Trading: once the order fills, you have a position — contracts you hold. Official Glossary: an open position is those contracts. The slice that already matched belongs on the filled-row screen, not on the leftover clip. Official Monitor Your Positions is that filled ticket. How to read average entry is the cost on those shares. This page does not clone it. The leftover is still working size.
Official Partial fill · Partially filled · matched slice ≠ leftover
How the middle state is labeled
Hard rule: if official help names the status, we name it. If the US swipe pages do not reprint that chip, we describe the action. Official Website vs App splits the international site from the US desk.
If public US help or the live list prints Partially filled — that is the word
Official Orders & Trading + Glossary
Official Orders & Trading prints Partially filled. Official Glossary prints partially filled under order status. If the live US working-order list, Portfolio row, or market-page clip already shows that phrase — or a close live variant such as Partial fill — follow that live text. We do not reprint a leftover count next to it.
Official Place a Trade does not reprint that chip on the first swipe
Describe the action
Official Place a Trade is still Yes or No, a dollar amount or Max, review, swipe, then open the Portfolio tab. Those steps do not reprint a retail stamp labelled “Partially filled” on the swipe we checked. Official Monitor Your Positions names cash, open positions, and total value — not a Partially filled column. We will not invent that header. The action is: find the working-order row (or the resting clip on the market you posted) and read whether some size already matched while the rest is still waiting.
International help names the same idea in different words
Official Limit Orders help
Official Limit Orders help (international, updated April 20, 2026): a limit does not have to execute all at once; it can “partially fill” as other traders take pieces. Official Website vs App: that website is not the US deposit-and-trade desk. We reprint the published sentence. We do not paste an international tab name onto the US app. If the US list never says partial, still treat leftover waiting size as working — Official Order Types already names that leftover an open order.
Official Partially filled · no invented US chip · follow the live row if it already prints one
Leftover size is still an open order
Official Order Types is the leftover rule this page is after. Official Orders & Trading is the two published exceptions. We name both. We do not walk a cancel, and we do not reprint a live ladder.
Leftover size stays on the book as an open order
Official Order Types
Official Order Types: if there is not enough size at your price, you receive a partial fill and the unfilled portion stays on the order book as an open order until it is filled or canceled. Official Glossary: an open order is waiting on the book to be filled. That remainder is still working. It is not a Yes/No you already own, and it is not a cancel until you actually cancel it.
Official teaching book — not tonight’s board
Official Order Types example
Official Order Types illustrates the leftover with a teaching book: you buy 1,000 Yes when the best ask is $0.52; if only 600 sit there, 600 match and 400 stay on the book at $0.52 as an open order; your execution price reflects only the portion that filled. That is a docs clip. It is not a live moneyline we invent, and it is not a personal leftover we reprint.
Two published exceptions — leftover is not always still open
Official Orders & Trading time-in-force
Official Orders & Trading: Immediate or cancel (IOC) fills whatever is available right now and cancels the rest — that remainder is not still sitting. Fill or kill (FOK) must fill completely or not at all — no partial fills. Official Place a Trade does not reprint those time-in-force names on the first-buy swipe we checked. We will not invent an IOC or FOK button. If the live ticket already prints one of those options, use the live label. The leftover-stays-open rule this page is after is the published Order Types path, not those two exceptions.
Official leftover = open order · docs $0.52 / 1,000-lot example · IOC / FOK are published exceptions
How to read the middle state
-
Step 1
Confirm you are reading a middle state — not a full fill and not a cancel
Official Glossary: a partial fill is only part of the order. Official Orders & Trading: Partially filled means some size matched and the rest is still open. If the whole clip already says Filled, you are holding a position — leave this page and open How to read your Polymarket portfolio. If you meant to pull the remainder, that click path is How to cancel or edit a Polymarket order. This page only names the split.
-
Step 2
Open the working-order row — or the market you posted — on the desk you actually use
Official Place a Trade: after a swipe, open the Portfolio tab. Official Website vs App: US residents trade in the Polymarket US app, not on polymarket.com. Official Limit Orders help (web) puts a resting clip just below the Order Book on that market’s page. Official US Monitor Your Positions does not reprint an “Open orders” tab or a “Partially filled” column — confirm the live list instead of hunting for a header we invent. How to read open orders is where that list lives. This page does not clone the locator.
-
Step 3
Read the published status — or describe the action if the live row is silent
If public US help or the live order list already prints Partially filled or Partial fill, that is the middle state. If the US row never prints those words, read the two facts Official Orders & Trading already names: some size matched, the rest is still open. Official Order Types: leftover stays as an open order. We will not invent a retail status chip those US swipe pages do not print, and we will not reprint a live leftover count.
-
Step 4
Split the matched piece from the leftover — they are not the same row
The contracts that already matched are a position. Official Monitor Your Positions is that filled ticket. Official Order Types: execution price reflects only the portion that filled. The leftover is still waiting on the book. Do not mash them into one “my money” line. How to read average entry is the cost on the filled slice. How to read the Polymarket order book is the public ladder your remainder is sitting on. We do not clone either.
-
Step 5
Stop — this is not how to cancel, and not maker versus taker
Finding the middle state is not pulling the remainder. Official Limit Orders help puts a cancel on the working-order row (the red x on that international page). Official US Place a Trade does not reprint that control on the first-buy swipe. The cancel-versus-edit walkthrough is a different how-to. Who added size versus who lifted it is How to tell maker from taker. Event contracts can settle at zero. Trade only what you can afford to lose. Nothing here is investment advice.
This is not how to cancel — and not the public book
Official Limit Orders help puts a cancel on the working-order row. That click path, plus cancel-replace versus selling a fill, lives on How to cancel or edit a Polymarket order. This page will not repeat the red x, invent a US Edit button, or walk what happens to cash after a cancel. Reading Partially filled is not pulling the remainder.
Finding the working-order list is How to read open orders on Polymarket. Official Glossary: the order book is bids and asks — other traders’ posted size. Your leftover is one request still sitting on that book. Bid versus ask is How to read the Polymarket order book. Who added size versus who lifted it is How to tell maker from taker. We do not clone those pages.
Blocked and contested states
Reported unavailable as of June 2026: Arizona, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada and Ohio. That list is not a promise it stays still — litigation around sports event contracts in particular can narrow or shift access. If you are in a listed state, do not treat leftover size as a remainder you can still manage. If you are in Florida or another green-light state, still confirm the working-order row (or the clip on that market) appears before you treat a leftover as yours.

What you will not get from this page
A dollar welcome match, a paste-this promo code, a live leftover count or fill price, an invented US “Partially filled” swipe chip the official Place a Trade page does not print, a cloned open-orders / cancel-edit / order-book / maker-versus-taker / average-entry walkthrough, or claim buttons for Kalshi, DraftKings, FanDuel, Underdog, Sleeper, PrizePicks, Hard Rock or BetRivers. We could not verify a standing official US welcome bonus on Polymarket’s own terms. Other publishers’ partner codes are theirs; we do not copy them. The honest user-facing line is still US access via CFTC-regulated QCEX — a partial fill is some size matched and the rest still open, official Orders & Trading names that state Partially filled, official Order Types leaves the leftover as an open order, official Place a Trade does not reprint that chip so we describe the action, this page is not how to cancel, and anything those public pages do not print is not a label or a number we invent.
