How to Read Open Interest on Polymarket (US 2026)

Current outstanding contracts — not 24h volume, and not the book. Not a live figure we invent.

By Scott · Last verified August 8, 2026

Trading involves risk — open interest is not a floor

Polymarket offers CFTC-regulated event contracts: financial/derivatives products, not sportsbook bets and not daily fantasy. You can lose money, including your entire stake. An open-interest figure is not a locked payout. Nothing on this page is investment advice. For adults 18+ with KYC. Sports markets are the most contested category; state availability can change. DFS pages on this site use a separate 21+ / 1-800-GAMBLER frame — do not mix the two.

Advertising disclosure: the claim button is an affiliate link. We may earn a commission if you sign up through it, at no extra cost to you. That never changes our ratings, and it is not a user bonus.

Who this guide is for

US adults who can already open a Polymarket ticket and now need to read open interest — where that stamp lives if official help names it, why current open interest is outstanding contracts and not 24h volume, and why it is not book depth. This is not how to read volume, not how to read liquidity, not how to read the order book, and not how to read price history. Those pages are the tape, posted size, the ladder, and the chart. This page is the outstanding figure on that ticket. Then we link out. Polymarket is the only live outbound on this page.

What open interest means on a ticket

Official Markets API names openInterest as current open interest. Official Data Guide lists that field next to volume. Official Glossary does not reprint a definition row — we will not invent one.

Open interest is current — contracts still outstanding

Official Markets API + Data Guide

Official Markets API names openInterest as current open interest. Official Data Guide lists open interest next to volume as a separate market statistic. Official Events API names the same field Open interest. “Current” is the published word: it is the stock still open, not a tape of fills that already printed. Official Glossary does not reprint a definition row labelled Open interest — we will not invent a calculation those US pages do not print.

That is not 24-hour volume

Official volume24hr

Official Markets API names volume as total trading volume and names volume24hr as 24-hour volume (plus volume1wk and volume1mo). Those are published history windows: matches that already happened. Current open interest is not one of those windows. A busy 24h stamp can sit next to a smaller outstanding figure, or the other way around. How to read volume is that tape. This page does not reprint it.

International “outstanding positions” — flagged, not a US retail sentence

Public international Analytics · we say so

Public international Analytics says open interest measures the value currently held in outstanding positions. That is the closest published “still open” sentence we found. Official Website vs App: US residents browse and trade in the Polymarket US app, not on polymarket.com. We could not confirm that outstanding-positions sentence, or a retail “OI $” chip, on the US help we checked. We will not mash the international wording onto the US swipe as a rule. If the ticket and the docs disagree, trust the live screen.

Official current open interest · not volume24hr · international outstanding-positions sentence flagged

Where open interest lives

Official Browse Markets is the home-screen tile. Official Place a Trade is tap to open the ticket. Hard rule: if those pages do not print a control name, we describe the action.

Open one market — look for open interest on that ticket

Official Browse + Place a Trade

Official Browse Markets: find markets on the home screen; each tile shows the question, the current Yes and No prices, and a resolution date. Official Place a Trade: tap any market to open it. That opened ticket is where you look for an open-interest / outstanding figure if the live screen prints one. Official Browse Markets does not list Open Interest on the tile. We will not invent a home-screen “OI” chip those pages do not print. If the sports desk is hidden where you live, stop.

US retail help does not reprint an Open Interest header

Action, not an invented tab

Official Place a Trade, Official Browse Markets, and Official Glossary do not reprint a retail column or tab labelled “Open Interest,” “OI,” or “Open Int.” on the swipe we checked. We will not invent one. The action is: on that opened ticket, look at the open-interest / outstanding figure that sits with the market if the live app prints it. If the live control is labelled differently — or is missing — use the live screen, then still separate that stamp from volume and from posted size. Official Website vs App: US residents do that in the Polymarket US app.

Official API names openInterest — that is not a phone-chip menu

Official Markets API + Events API

Official Markets API market-book and BBO stats name openInterest as current open interest. Official Events API names openInterest as Open interest. Official Market Data Stream names open_interest the same way. Official Data Guide lists open interest under market statistics. Those are published field names. Official Place a Trade does not reprint them as an OI chip. We will not paste an API field onto the US swipe as if the retail page printed that menu.

Do not mash “open position” into market open interest

Official Glossary · two different rows

Official Glossary: an open position is the contracts you currently hold. That is your Portfolio row — How to read your Polymarket portfolio. Market openInterest is a market statistic, not your personal clip. Official Glossary also names an open order as a working bid or ask still sitting. Neither row is a retail Open Interest tab, and neither is a live number we reprint.

Official US docs · open the ticket · no invented OI tab · open position ≠ market openInterest

Open interest is not book depth

Official Liquidity is posted size now. Official Prices & Market Data is the BBO you can take. See how to read liquidity and how to read the order book for that clip — this page does not repeat those teaching fills.

Book depth is posted size at listed prices

Official Glossary + Liquidity

Official Glossary: size is the number of contracts available to buy or sell at a given price; liquidity is how much of that size is there to trade. Official Liquidity: that clip is resting orders other users left, waiting to be matched. Official market-book stats name qty as quantity available at a price, plus bidDepth and askDepth as how many levels sit on each side. That ladder is the now-book. How to read liquidity and how to read the order book are those pages. This page does not clone them.

Current open interest is not that ladder

Two different clocks

Official Markets API names openInterest as current open interest and names liquidity as current market liquidity. Official Data Guide lists open interest with volume under market statistics — not as L2 depth. A fat outstanding figure can sit next to a thin best ask. Official Spreads: you buy at the ask. Official Prices & Market Data: a market order fills at the best available price on the other side if size is there. Read posted size first. Then glance at open interest as the stock still open.

Do not treat OI as a fill you can lift

Official Liquidity + Settlement

Official Liquidity: leftover size fills the next prices if the best level cannot cover the clip. Official How are Polymarket odds determined?: Polymarket US does not set prices; odds move when the next orders match. Official Market Settlement: a winning contract still settles at $1.00 and a losing contract at $0.00. Current open interest is not a sportsbook hold, not a locked payout, and not the ask you will pay. We do not reprint a live OI or a live ladder.

Official size / liquidity / qty · official openInterest · OI ≠ the ask you will pay

Do not invent a live number or an OI formula

Hard rule: if official US retail help names the control, we name it. If it does not, we describe the action. Official Markets API field names are not a phone menu. Public international Get open interest is a data route — we flag it as that, not as a market-page chip.

We will not invent a live open-interest number

No live board

Official Markets API and Official Events API can name openInterest. Those are field names, not tonight’s NFL tape we quote. Official market-book teaching JSON includes an openInterest field — a docs example, not a live moneyline. Confirm whatever figure is on the ticket after KYC. We will not reprint a dollar OI, a share count, or a “this market has $X outstanding.”

We will not invent an OI formula

No invented equation

Official Glossary defines size and liquidity. Official Markets API names openInterest as current open interest. Official US retail help does not print “open interest = volume − closes,” a shares-versus-dollars conversion, or a “safe OI” threshold. We will not invent that equation. Public international Analytics names outstanding positions as a value — we flag that sentence; we do not turn it into a US retail formula.

An international /oi route is not a phone stamp

Public international Get open interest · flagged

Public international Get open interest documents a /oi data route. Official Website vs App: US residents trade in the Polymarket US app, not on that website. We will not paste that route, a GLOBAL aggregate, or an international SDK call onto the US swipe as if Place a Trade printed a button. If you wanted the tape, that is How to read volume. If you wanted the chart, that is How to read price history.

No invented OI tab · no invented equation · no live figure

How to read open interest before you click

  1. Step 1

Open one market page and find the open-interest / outstanding figure on that ticket

Official Browse Markets: each market shows the question, the Yes and No prices, and a resolution date — not an Open Interest column. Official Place a Trade: tap any market to open it. Official Place a Trade does not reprint a retail tab labelled “Open Interest” or “OI” on the swipe we checked — we will not invent one. The action is: on the opened ticket, look at the open-interest / outstanding figure that sits with the market if the live screen prints one. Official Website vs App: US residents do that in the Polymarket US app. If the sports desk is hidden where you live, stop.

  2. Step 2

Read open interest as current outstanding contracts — not 24h volume

Official Markets API names openInterest as current open interest, and names volume24hr as 24-hour volume. Official Data Guide lists volume and open interest as separate market statistics. Those are published field names, not a confirmed retail chip menu. Current open interest is the stock still open. A 24h volume stamp is matches that already printed. Public international Analytics calls that stock the value held in outstanding positions — flagged, not a US retail sentence. We do not reprint a live figure.

  3. Step 3

Separate that stamp from posted size on the live book

Official Glossary: size is contracts at a price; liquidity is how much of that size is there to trade. Official market-book stats name qty, bidDepth, and askDepth as the ladder. Official Spreads: you buy at the ask. Official Prices & Market Data: a tight spread means the market is liquid; a wide spread means fewer people are trading. A large open-interest number can sit next to a thin best ask. If the headline and the book disagree, the book in-app is the trade. How to read liquidity and how to read the Polymarket order book are that clip — this page does not clone them.

  4. Step 4

Do not treat current open interest as a lock — then still read the book

Official Liquidity: treat the displayed price as dynamic, especially in live sports — size can vanish late, in overtime, after a score or injury, or when the result looks decided. Official How are Polymarket odds determined?: prices move when the next orders match. Official Market Settlement: the side that wins still settles at $1.00 and the side that loses at $0.00. Current open interest is not a floor and not a sportsbook hold. How to read price history is the chart. This page does not clone it.

  5. Step 5

Do not invent a live number or an OI formula — then leave the other how-tos alone

We will not reprint a live OI, invent an Open Interest tab, or write an “OI = volume − closes” equation those US pages do not print. Official Glossary open position is your held contracts, not the market statistic. How to read volume is the tape. How to read liquidity is posted size. How to read the order book is the ladder. How to read price history is the chart. Event contracts can settle at zero. Trade only what you can afford to lose. Nothing here is investment advice.

Blocked and contested states

Reported unavailable as of June 2026: Arizona, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada and Ohio. That list is not a promise it stays still — litigation around sports event contracts in particular can narrow or shift access. If you are in a listed state, do not treat an open-interest stamp as a fill on the assumption the desk is open. If you are in Florida or another green-light state, still confirm the ticket appears and still accepts orders before you send money.

Age is 18+ with identity verification. That is a different gate from the 21+ / responsible-gambling frame on our DFS pages, because these are traded financial instruments. If you also want NFL DFS, start at the picks hub — those lineup rules do not carry over. Compare platforms on the prediction-markets hub.

What you will not get from this page

A dollar welcome match, a paste-this promo code, a live open-interest figure, an invented Open Interest tab or OI equation, a cloned volume / liquidity / order-book / price-history walkthrough, or claim buttons for Kalshi, DraftKings, FanDuel, Underdog, Sleeper, PrizePicks, Hard Rock or BetRivers. We could not verify a standing official US welcome bonus on Polymarket’s own terms. Other publishers’ partner codes are theirs; we do not copy them. The honest user-facing line is still US access via CFTC-regulated QCEX — current open interest lives on the opened market page if the live screen prints it, that stamp is outstanding contracts not 24h volume, it is not book depth, and anything those public pages do not print is not a label or a formula we invent. Official Place a Trade does not reprint a retail tab labelled “Open Interest” or “OI” on the swipe we checked; we describe the action instead of inventing that header. Look at the open-interest / outstanding figure on the opened ticket if the live screen prints one. Official Markets API names openInterest as current open interest. Official Website vs App: US residents do that in the Polymarket US app. The only live claim on this page hops through /go/polymarket.
What does open interest mean on a Polymarket ticket?
Official Markets API names openInterest as current open interest. Official Data Guide lists open interest next to volume as a separate market statistic. Current means the stock still open — outstanding contracts — not a 24h tape. Official Glossary does not reprint a definition row labelled Open interest; we will not invent a formula. No. Official Markets API names volume24hr as 24-hour volume — completed trades in a published window. Official Markets API names openInterest as current open interest. Official Data Guide lists both under market statistics. A fat 24h tape can sit next to a smaller outstanding figure. How to read volume is that history stamp. This page is the stock still open.
Is Polymarket open interest the same as liquidity or book depth?
No. Official Glossary: size is contracts available at a price; liquidity is how much of that size is there to trade. Official Liquidity puts that clip on the book. Official market-book stats name qty, bidDepth, and askDepth as the ladder. Official Markets API names liquidity as current market liquidity and names openInterest as current open interest. A large outstanding figure is not the next fill if size has been pulled. How to read liquidity and how to read the order book are that depth.
Is market open interest the same as my open position?
No. Official Glossary: an open position is the contracts you currently hold. That is your Portfolio row. Market openInterest is a published market statistic — current open interest — not your personal clip. Official Glossary also names an open order as a working bid or ask still sitting. How to read your Polymarket portfolio is the screen for your row. This page is the market stamp.
Do you publish live open-interest numbers or an OI formula?
No. Official Markets API and Official Events API name openInterest as a field. Official Glossary does not print a calculation. Public international Get open interest is a data route, not a retail chip we paste onto the ticket. Confirm the live screen after KYC.
Is this the same as the volume, liquidity, order-book, or price-history how-to?
No. Volume is the tape of completed trades. Liquidity is posted size sitting now. The order-book how-to is bid versus ask and why a market walks. Price history is the chart / last-trade tape. This page is only open interest on the ticket: where that stamp lives if official help names it, that current open interest is outstanding contracts not 24h volume, and that it is not book depth. We link out instead of cloning those click paths.
Can I read and trade Polymarket open interest in every US state?
No. As of our June 2026 check Polymarket was reported unavailable in Arizona, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada and Ohio. Florida is a green-light state. Polymarket only. The claim button hops through /go/polymarket. There is no /go/kalshi, DraftKings, FanDuel, Underdog, Sleeper, PrizePicks, Hard Rock or BetRivers claim here. We do not invent tracking URLs.
Is there a Polymarket open-interest bonus or promo code on this page?
No. We do not publish a dollar welcome or a promo code. Partner codes that appear on other sites belong to those publishers. Confirm any live terms in the Polymarket US app. If you open Polymarket through our link we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you — that is not a user bonus.
Is reading Polymarket open interest the same as reading a sportsbook handle or an NFL DFS slate?
No. A sportsbook posts a house line you take or leave. Daily fantasy is a state-licensed gambling product — often 21+, with a 1-800-GAMBLER frame. Event contracts are CFTC-regulated financial/derivatives products, typically 18+ with KYC. Other traders print this open interest and post this book. A contract can settle at zero. There is no protected bonus floor.
