Who this guide is for
US adults who already hold a Polymarket US position and now need to read unmarked / unrealized P&L — what that live gap means, where profit lives if official help or the live Portfolio names it, why the number moves with last trade or mid, and why it is not withdrawable cash. This is not how to read your Polymarket portfolio, not how to read average entry, not how to sell a ticket early, not how to cash out, and not how fees work. Those pages are the whole Portfolio screen, your cost on the filled row, the bid-side exit, the bank off-ramp, and the published cost stack. This page is the moving gap. Then we link out. Polymarket is the only live outbound here.
What unmarked / unrealized P&L means
Official Positions & Risk names unrealized P&L as mark versus cost basis. Official Monitor Your Positions does not reprint that as a retail Profit column — it prints average entry next to current market. Official Glossary names position value. We name the published pieces. We do not invent a P&L tab.
Unrealized P&L is the live gap — mark versus what you paid
Official Positions & Risk
Official Positions & Risk: unrealized P&L is calculated from the current mark versus cost basis. Official Valuation API writes the same idea as unrealizedPnl = market_value − cost. Official Monitor Your Positions sits current market price next to average entry price on the open position. Official Glossary: position value is the real-time dollar value of those contracts. The action you are reading is that gap. It is not a bank credit, and it is not a number we reprint.
“Unmarked P&L” is our phrase when the retail row has no Profit header
Official docs do not name a P&L tab
Official Monitor Your Positions, Official Place a Trade, and Official Glossary do not reprint a retail column literally labelled “P&L,” “Unrealized P&L,” or “Profit.” We will not invent one. If the live Portfolio prints that phrase, use the live label. If it only prints average entry next to current market — or a green or red gap with no name — that gap is the unmarked reading this page is for.
Official settlement profit is a different clock
Official Prices & Market Data teaching fill
Official Prices & Market Data teaches a Yes bought at $0.55 that settles $1.00 as +$0.45 per contract — or $0.00 if that side loses. That is settlement math on a docs example, not tonight’s book, and not the live gap on an open row. Official Positions & Risk names realized P&L only after a position closes. Unrealized is the mark while you still hold.
Official unrealized P&L · retail gap, not an invented Profit chip · no live number
Where P&L / profit lives
Hard rule: if official US help names a field, we name it. If a tab is not on those pages, we describe the action. Official Website vs App splits the international site from the US desk.
US app — open the Portfolio tab, then the filled row
Official Place a Trade
Official Place a Trade: after you swipe, open the Portfolio tab to track the position and market value. Official Website vs App: US residents deposit and trade in the Polymarket US app, not on polymarket.com. Official Monitor Your Positions is the filled ticket. If the live app labels the same screen Profile, Positions, or something else, use the live control — we will not invent a second header those pages do not print.
Published fields you can actually confirm
Official Monitor Your Positions + Glossary
Official Monitor Your Positions: cash balance, open positions, and total value, plus contracts held, average entry price, current market price, and potential payout on each open position. Official Glossary names position value as the real-time dollar value of those contracts. Those are the published names. The unmarked gap is what you read between average entry and current market (or position value versus what you paid). We do not reprint a live dollar on any of them.
Trader docs name unrealized P&L — that is not a confirmed phone chip
Official Positions & Risk · flagged
Official Positions & Risk names Cost Basis as average entry price, total cost, and the input to unrealized P&L, and it names Realized P&L as profit or loss from closed positions. Official Valuation API returns unrealizedPnl on a position query. Official Place a Trade does not reprint those strings as a retail Profit tab. We will not paste an API field onto the US swipe. If the live row already prints P&L or Profit, follow that live text.

Why the number moves with last trade or mid
Official How are Polymarket odds determined? is the match that reprints the book. Official market-book stats name lastTradePx. Official Valuation API names LAST and MID as mark types — trader docs, not a confirmed US retail header.
The mark updates when the book reprints — you do not have to trade
Official Place a Trade + Positions & Risk
Official Place a Trade and Official Monitor Your Positions: positions update in real time as market prices change. Official Positions & Risk: positions are marked-to-market using current market prices on liquid instruments; unrealized P&L updates on that mark. Official How are Polymarket odds determined?: prices update whenever a buy or sell is matched, and Polymarket US does not set the price. Someone else’s print can move your gap while you sit still.
Last trade is one published mark — not automatically your cash
Official lastTradePx + Valuation LAST
Official US market-book stats name lastTradePx as the most recent match on that market — anyone’s print. Official Valuation API names LAST as the last traded price and lists it as the default mark type on those valuation endpoints. Official Place a Trade does not reprint a retail column labelled “Last” or “Mark = LAST” on the swipe we checked. We will not invent one. If the live gap ticks when the last print ticks, that is the last-trade clock those pages already name.
Mid is a published mark type — not a confirmed retail header
Official Valuation MID · flagged
Official Valuation API names MID as a mark type and defines that mid as (high + low) / 2. Official Spreads and Official Prices & Market Data name the bid, the ask, and the BBO — the book you can take now — not a retail column labelled “Mid.” We will not invent a Mid chip or claim the US app uses LAST versus MID. The action is the same: the gap can move when the last print moves or when the published mid / current-market mark moves. Confirm the live row.

Unrealized P&L is not cash — selling early is how it becomes cash
Official Check Your Balance is the cash rule. Official Can I sell early? is the open-market path. Official Market Settlement is the hold-to-grade path. Neither is the gap on the row.
Cash is the money not tied to the open ticket
Official Check Your Balance
Official Check Your Balance and Official Glossary: cash is the money not tied to any open position. Official Monitor Your Positions: cash is funds available to trade or withdraw. Official Check Your Balance: withdrawals come only from that cash — and only after the funding deposit has fully cleared. A green gap on the filled row is not that cash row.
Selling early is how the gap becomes cash on the exchange
Official Can I sell early?
Official “Can I sell early?”: you can close a position at any time; sale proceeds are added immediately to your cash balance. Official What is Polymarket US?: if prices move in your favor you can close early and take profits — that is a sale, not a mark. Official Spreads: a marketable sell is paid the bid, not last trade and not a mid you cannot lift. The fill can be worse than the gap on screen. That swipe lives on How to sell a Polymarket ticket early. This page only names why the mark is not yet cash.
Holding to Clearing is the other way the row leaves
Official Market Settlement
Official Market Settlement: after the outcome is finalized, Polymarket Clearing marks winners $1.00 and losers $0.00 and updates Portfolio when settlement completes. Official Check Your Balance: proceeds from resolved markets return to cash automatically. Official Positions & Risk: a close records realized P&L; settlement determines the final figure. Event contracts can settle at zero. Potential payout on the open row is that upside if your side grades yes — not today’s withdrawable balance.
A slightly-down mark right after a buy can be leftover dollars
Official whole-contracts FAQ
Official “Why does my position look down right after I buy?”: Polymarket US only fills whole contracts. Leftover dollars from a dollar-amount order return to cash, so Portfolio can show the position slightly down even though you did not take a market loss. That FAQ is not a live P&L we reprint, and it is not the same fact as last trade or mid rewriting the mark. Do not treat leftover dollars as realized cash gone.

How to read unrealized P&L
-
Step 1
Open the US Portfolio tab and find the open position — not the international website
Official Place a Trade: open the Portfolio tab to track the position and market value. Official Website vs App: US residents use the Polymarket US app; polymarket.com is a different product. Official Monitor Your Positions: look at the open-position row — contracts held, average entry price, current market price, potential payout. If a control is labelled differently in-app, use the live screen. If the sports desk is hidden where you live, stop. How to read your Polymarket portfolio is the whole screen. This page is only the unmarked gap on that row.
-
Step 2
Read the gap as unmarked / unrealized P&L — not a Profit tab we invent
Official Positions & Risk: unrealized P&L is mark versus cost basis. Official Valuation API: unrealizedPnl = market_value − cost. Official Monitor Your Positions, Official Place a Trade, and Official Glossary do not reprint a retail “P&L,” “Unrealized P&L,” or “Profit” column on the swipe we checked. We will not invent one. Read average entry versus current market — or position value versus what you paid. If the live row already prints P&L or Profit, use that live label. We do not reprint a live figure.
-
Step 3
Expect the number to move with last trade or the published mid — without you selling
Official Place a Trade: positions update in real time as prices change. Official How are Polymarket odds determined?: prices update whenever a buy or sell is matched. Official lastTradePx is anyone’s most recent print. Official Valuation API names LAST (last traded price, default on those endpoints) and MID ((high + low) / 2) as mark types. Official US retail pages do not print which of those the Portfolio row uses. We will not invent the mark. Confirm the live gap after the next print. How to read average entry is your cost. This page is the moving difference.
-
Step 4
Treat that gap as a mark — not withdrawable cash
Official Check Your Balance: cash is the money not tied to an open position, and withdrawals come only from cash. Official “Can I sell early?”: a sale adds proceeds to cash immediately. Official Market Settlement: holding through Clearing is $1.00 or $0.00, then Portfolio updates. Official “Why does my position look down right after I buy?”: leftover dollars can make the row look slightly down without a market loss. A green or red gap is not a debit-card credit. Official Positions & Risk even asks whether fees sit inside P&L — official US retail pages we checked do not print that net. How Polymarket fees work is the published cost stack. This page does not clone it.
-
Step 5
Stop — selling early is how the gap becomes cash; the bank off-ramp is later
Official Place a Trade: you can cash out anytime while the market is open or hold until it resolves. The bid-side exit lives on How to sell a Polymarket ticket early. Turning exchange cash into a bank credit lives on How to cash out on Polymarket. The rest of Portfolio is How to read your Polymarket portfolio. Average entry is How to read average entry. Fees are How Polymarket fees work. This page does not clone them. Event contracts can settle at zero. Trade only what you can afford to lose. Nothing here is investment advice.
Blocked and contested states
Reported unavailable as of June 2026: Arizona, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada and Ohio. That list is not a promise it stays still — litigation around sports event contracts in particular can narrow or shift access. If you are in a listed state, do not treat an unmarked P&L as money you can withdraw. If you are in Florida or another green-light state, still confirm Portfolio opens before you treat a gap as yours.
Age is 18+ with identity verification. That is a different gate from the 21+ / responsible-gambling frame on our DFS pages, because these are traded financial instruments. If you also want NFL DFS, start at the picks hub — those contest-score rules do not carry over. Compare platforms on the prediction-markets hub.
What you will not get from this page
A dollar welcome match, a paste-this promo code, a live P&L or last trade, an invented Profit / P&L / Mid column, a claim that the US app uses LAST versus MID, a net-of-fee P&L those US pages do not print, a cloned portfolio / average-entry / sell-early / cash-out / fees walkthrough, or claim buttons for Kalshi, DraftKings, FanDuel, Underdog, Sleeper, PrizePicks, Hard Rock or BetRivers. We could not verify a standing official US welcome bonus on Polymarket’s own terms. Other publishers’ partner codes are theirs; we do not copy them. The honest user-facing line is still US access via CFTC-regulated QCEX — open the Portfolio tab in the US app, unrealized P&L is mark versus cost on trader docs and not a confirmed retail header, the action is the gap between average entry and current market, that gap can move with lastTradePx or the published MID mark, it is not cash until you sell while the market is open or Clearing settles the ticket, and anything those US pages do not print is not a label we invent.
